Domicile Kitchen & Lounge

Durian cheese cake
Domicile Kitchen & Lounge opened its doors in the beginning of this year and many of you may have already tried it. We heard from quite a number of people that Domicile is one of the new trending places in Surabaya (mainly due to its unique lounge atmosphere). We just made it there last week (we are no trendsetters) and had quite high expectations.

The place is big and the interior looks very nice. We took only a few (bad) photos of the place itself but you can find nice pictures at Laura Angelia’s blog (she also did a review). We sat outside on a comfortable sofa-chair combination. There is some kind of air-conditioning outside and (fake) plants hanging above your heads. We didn’t really like that the plants are fake but if they were real, they would maybe attract unwanted insects.

Now, let’s get to the most important part: the food.

Our friends A. & N. had Nachos as a starter while waiting for us (damn macet!). They come with cheese, some minced meat and guacamole. For nachos, we believe that there is not much you can do wrong. The guacamole was average. For the main course Carlo had duck confit with mashed potatoes and I had grilled salmon with truffle fries. We both found that the sauces that accompanied our dishes did not fit. The quality of the salmon was good but it was too overcooked. Our friend N. had the black ink fettuccini with seafood, one of Domicile’s signature dishes. For those of you who do not know: the black colour of the pasta is from a natural source, it comes from squid ink. This sounds quite scary at first but black ink pasta is quite common in Italy and the taste is (almost) same as normal pasta. Domicile’s black ink fettuccini tasted quite good, the best of all the main dishes we tried.
For dessert, we ordered warm toffee pudding cake with vanilla ice cream and durian cheesecake. Carlo’s heart skipped a beat when he saw that they had durian cheesecake. He loves durian and cheesecake is his favourite kind of cake so the combination of those two sounded like heaven to him. Indeed, the cake was delicious. The other dessert we had, the toffee pudding, was quite good too.
We also tried one of their cocktails: the watermelon cooler. It is a mix of vodka, fresh watermelon, lemon juice and soda. To our surprise, the cocktail was quite strong, too strong for my taste (but I generally do not really like alcohol).

Domicile’s service was not so good. Both the drinks and food took quite long. But the main dishes were served at about the same time so there was no food envy. It was interesting that the waitress changed Carlo’s and A.’s knives for the main dish (some main dishes require a special knife) but she did not give A. a new clean fork (he used the initial one for the nachos).

We found that Domicile’s food is expensive and tastes average. If you like places that look nice and do not care so much about the food, this place is for you. Otherwise, there are other options in the same price range that offer you better value for money.

Conclusion: Domicile is a place where you pay for the atmosphere.

Good to know: Free wifi. Hardly any vegetarian options for main dish.
