Tong Tong Japanese Resto

Carlo used to go to this place very often but had not been there for a long time. So we went there on a quiet weekday evening and had a nice date. It was the calm before the storm because after dinner we went on a crazy supermarket shopping marathon to find some European ingredients for me to cook at home (update: the food I cooked was not good -.- ).

Tong Tong is one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in Surabaya. When we got there, a group of Japanese businessmen were having dinner. So we figured that if even Japanese people eat at this place, it must be authentic! It was also very interesting to watch those businessmen, the way they were communicating was, well, very Japanese.

The place itself does not really look nice, it is very simple. If you like fancy places, Tong Tong is not for you. They have a great variety of dishes (not so much for drinks) and we ordered Ten Oroshi Don (58K) and Udang Curry (61K) and Ocha for drink (8K). Carlo’s Ten Oroshi Don was really delicious! We both really liked it. For the Udang Curry, you can choose how spicy you want it (biasa – sedang – pedas). We chose sedang, it was a bit spicy for me (but not for Carlo) and It was delicious too. For most dishes, you can choose the size. We chose small for the Udang Curry and it was still a lot (for a girl). The service was very good but this was maybe because the place was not crowded at all. One of the waitresses remembered Carlo and they had a chat. The food took actually a bit longer to be done compared to other restaurants but maybe it just seemed so long because we were super hungry. We liked that our two dishes arrived at the same time so there was no food envy :-D .

Tong Tong is not a fancy place but it serves authentic Japanese food at reasonable prices. We were lucky to get not only delicious food but also a free lesson in Japanese communication by watching the Japanese businessmen. For me, it is sometimes still hard to distinguish between Chinese, Korean and Japanese people, so this was very helpful. Japanese have very unique facial expressions and gestures and it was interesting to watch them :-) .

Conclusion: Tong Tong serves authentic Japanese food at reasonable prices in a very simple setting.
